Understanding Earnifi financial terms

Financial Terms Glossary

ACH (Automated Clearing House)
An electronic network for processing bank transfers in the United States. The app uses ACH for free standard delivery of Early Pay advances, which typically takes 1โ€“3 business days. Learn about Early Pay โ†’
AES-256 Encryption
Advanced Encryption Standard with a 256-bit key โ€” the same encryption grade used by banks and the U.S. military. The app uses AES-256 to protect your personal and financial data both in transit and at rest. Read our security analysis โ†’
Alternative Data (Credit)
Non-traditional payment information โ€” such as rent, utilities, or phone bills โ€” that can be used to evaluate creditworthiness. The app reports rent payments as alternative data to help users with thin credit files build credit history.
Automatic Repayment
A feature where Earnifi automatically deducts the advance amount from your next paycheck via your linked bank account. This eliminates the need to remember payment dates and prevents late fees.
Credit Bureau
A company that collects and maintains consumer credit information. The three major U.S. bureaus are Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The app reports on-time rent payments to all three. Learn about credit building โ†’
Credit Invisible
A person who has no credit file at any of the three major credit bureaus. Approximately 26 million Americans are credit invisible. Earnifi's credit-building feature helps create a credit file through rent-payment reporting.
Direct Deposit
An electronic transfer of your paycheck from your employer directly into your bank account. Earnifi requires direct deposit to verify income and set up earned wage access.
Earned Wage Access (EWA)
A financial service that lets employees access a portion of their already-earned wages before their scheduled payday. Unlike personal loans, EWA does not charge interest and is based on hours already worked. Earnifi's Early Pay feature provides EWA up to $500. Learn about Earnifi Early Pay โ†’
FICO Score
The most widely used credit scoring model in the United States, ranging from 300 to 850. Payment history accounts for 35% of your FICO score โ€” which is why consistent on-time rent payments through the app can meaningfully improve it. Credit-building guide โ†’
Instant Pay
Earnifi's optional premium delivery method that sends your Early Pay advance to your Visaยฎ SpendCard within minutes, for a flat fee of $4.50 per pay cycle. Is Instant Pay worth it? โ†’
Overdraft Fee
A charge banks impose when a transaction exceeds your available balance โ€” typically $35. The Earnifi Visa SpendCard avoids this by simply declining transactions that exceed your balance. Learn about the SpendCard โ†’
Personal Loan
A short-term, high-interest loan typically due on your next pay date. Personal loans often carry high APRs. The service is explicitly not a personal loan โ€” it charges 0% interest and no origination fees.
Plaid
A financial technology company that securely connects apps to your bank account. The app uses Plaid to verify income and link accounts without ever seeing your bank password. Plaid is SOC 2 Type II certified and used by Venmo, Robinhood, and thousands of other financial apps.
Prepaid Debit Card
A payment card loaded with funds in advance (not borrowed). The Visaยฎ SpendCard is a prepaid debit card โ€” you can only spend what is on the card, eliminating debt and overdraft risk.
Rent Splitting
An Earnifi feature that divides your monthly rent payment into two installments over 15 days, aligning your rent schedule with your income cycle. Learn about Rent Splitting โ†’
Thin File
A credit report with very few accounts or limited payment history. Thin-file consumers often struggle to get approved for credit cards, loans, or apartments. Earnifi's credit-building feature adds a positive tradeline to strengthen thin files.
TLS (Transport Layer Security)
A cryptographic protocol that secures data in transit between your device and a server. The app uses TLS 1.2 or higher โ€” the same standard protecting online banking and e-commerce.
Tradeline
A record on your credit report representing one credit account โ€” such as a credit card, loan, or reported rent payment. Each Earnifi rent payment adds positive data to your tradeline, building your credit profile over time.
